What is Grounded?

Grounded is Obsidian Entertainment's backyard survival adventure. Shrunk to the size of an ant, you explore a sprawling backyard world, battle spiders and other insects, build bases from blades of grass, and uncover the mystery of how you got small — solo or in co-op with up to four players.

Grounded Multiplayer: Shared Worlds vs Dedicated Servers

Grounded takes a different approach to multiplayer than most survival games. There is no dedicated server support — instead, up to four players connect peer-to-peer, and the Shared World system syncs the save to every authorized player so any of you can host the session when the original creator is offline.

What Shared Worlds Do Well

The synced save means the world is never locked to one person's PC. Whoever is online first can spin up the world, and everyone's progress stays in one place.

Where They Fall Short

Someone still has to host. Sessions depend on the host's upload speed and hardware, the world sleeps when nobody hosts it, and there is no always-online backyard to come back to — the main reasons survival players move to dedicated servers.

The sequel changes the math: Grounded 2 has real dedicated server hosting through our Lantern launcher, with your backyard running 24/7 in a datacenter. If your group has moved on, grab a Grounded 2 dedicated server.

Frequently Asked Questions about Grounded Server Hosting

Grounded includes online gameplay for up to four players. The co-op gameplay supports four players per session using peer-to-peer connectivity rather than dedicated servers.

No, Grounded does not support traditional dedicated servers. The game uses peer-to-peer connectivity where one person acts as the host, preferably someone with the fastest upload connection and best computer hardware.

Instead of dedicated servers, Grounded uses a "shared world" function. When authorized players join, they host the world using peer-to-peer connection. Every player who has played in that world will have access to a synced save that any of them can use, allowing you to play regardless of whether the game originator is available.

Obsidian has not shipped official dedicated servers for Grounded 2, but Survival Servers offers Grounded 2 dedicated server hosting today through Lantern, our custom server and launcher. Your world runs 24/7 on datacenter hardware, friends join through the Lantern launcher, and the backyard keeps going even when the original host is offline. See our Grounded 2 server hosting page for details.

Since Grounded uses peer-to-peer hosting without dedicated server support, modifying player count beyond the 4-player limit is not officially supported. Some VPS hosting providers offer solutions that could potentially be used for custom setups with full root access for manual mod installation.
