Without SurvivalServers

Running a Stormworks dedicated server yourself takes quite a bit more setup:

System Requirements

  • A supported Windows machine for the dedicated server
  • At least 3 GB for the current game installation, plus additional space for worlds and backups
  • A machine you are willing to leave running whenever anyone wants to play
  • A stable internet connection and firewall access for the server and Steam networking
  • A Steam account that owns Stormworks for installation

Installation

  • Install the Stormworks base game, Steam App ID 573090, using an account that owns it. The current dedicated server is included in that installation.
  • Launch server64.exe from the game directory. Use +server_dir to select a separate folder for the server configuration and saves.
  • Set the server name, password and player limit in server_config.xml. Allow its query port, one above the configured base port, and the game's Steam networking through your firewall.
  • Stop the server before changing its configuration. Keep a backup of the configuration and the entire active world.
  • Back up the whole world directory under saves, including vehicle files, vehicle groups and script data. Copying only scene.xml does not preserve the complete world.
  • Give each instance its own +server_dir folder and distinct ports when running multiple servers on one machine.
  • Share the server name and game password. Players find it in the Stormworks multiplayer server browser.

Mods

  • Stormworks supports Steam Workshop vehicles and missions, including Lua mission addons.
  • Workshop content and mission addons have their own installation requirements. Keep a backup before changing a world's addon selection.

Stormworks Settings, Saves and Sizing

Configuration

Set the server name and password in the control panel, and use its Start, Stop, Restart and update controls to manage the server.

Joining

Open Multiplayer in Stormworks, find the server by its name and enter its game password when prompted. The game password is separate from your FTP password.

Sizing

Server load depends on active vehicles, their complexity, physics and mission addons as well as player count. Choose a plan for your group and keep unused vehicles cleared from the world.
