SpartaChrisTV 2 Report post Posted February 5, 2021 Ok so say im running along and the world crashes (like others have said happened). We log back in, and a bunch of progress is gone. Is there a way to MANUALLY FORCE a GAME SAVE? If so, whats the easiest way. I Have FileZilla and have the FTP all logged in and what not, just need a little direction on how to save the game whenever i want. I wish i could just type /save or something like that and have the file backup. Or perhaps have an option on the control panel that you can click and it backups that file at that exact point in time? A little help from some mods here would be much appreciated. Thanks! TJ Wukitsch
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 5, 2021 There's no way at this time. It's hard-coded to 30 min save intervals and with game server hosting there is no way to soft save (every provider will have the same issue until they add RCON) UPDATE: This has been changed in subsequent Valheim updates. You can now type save in F5 menu as Admin to save on the fly. Chris Carey and VikingsArise
mcfaen 0 Report post Posted February 5, 2021 Quote It's hard-coded to 30 min save intervals ...and the backups only save every 6 hours it seems?
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 5, 2021 The backup you see is a third party remote backup which is different from the local 30 minute save interval.
Motokid600 1 Report post Posted February 8, 2021 So as far as saving progress at the end of each session we should just afk for a half hour after calling it? Im okay with that. Sleeping does nothing as far as saves go?
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 8, 2021 Yep pretty much. If you intend on Stopping/Restating server make sure it's saved. UPDATE: This has been changed in subsequent Valheim updates. You can now type save in F5 menu as Admin to save on the fly.
Ron Swanson 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2021 So just to clarify if we dont restart the server we can all just leave when ever and it'll be fine. If we restart the server wait 30 mins.
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 8, 2021 Correct. If there are players on you will want to wait the 30 minutes. Otherwise don't worry about it. Ron Swanson
szopen 1 Report post Posted February 12, 2021 @Ryan Penningtonis there any option to check when server was saved? Like checking date on some files in FTP? Also if you can tell me please, what is the timezone on dates in the FTP server?
EnnuiLudens 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2021 How can we even check to see when it's saved if there are no save files kept on the server to begin with? Your FTP link to the server I run only has the original world files without any progress at all. I cant even get a copy of my world in it's current state. Nicholas Blank 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2021 Can you please explain the 30-minute save intervals? Are the saves happening at fixed times like 1PM, then 1:30PM? Or are the 30-minute intervals based on when players are on and making updates to the world?
Tim Brutton 5 Report post Posted February 14, 2021 30 minute save interval is hard-coded and happens every 30m of game uptime. You can press F5 to open the console in-game and just type "save" to save the game manually at any time. These are both functions built into the Valheim dedicated server, not Survival Servers hosting i.e. they will work the same regardless of if you host the game on your own PC, or host it here, or host it with any other provider. Nicholas Blank 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2021 Is there a way to see if the save has taken place by looking at any files on the FTP server? Also, does game uptime mean someone is logged in and playing for that 30 minutes or the server is just online?
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 14, 2021 AFAIK typing Save from the command line in F5 does nothing. UPDATE: This has been changed in subsequent Valheim updates. You can now type save in F5 menu as Admin to save on the fly. TJ Wukitsch
Tim Brutton 5 Report post Posted February 15, 2021 I don't think there's any way to tell for sure without checking the timestamps of the world files before and after - I'm a new customer so I haven't got used to the interface enough to figure out whether we can do that here. But "F5 - save" is what's documented in the dedicated server readme and against the "F5 - info" command to initiate a manual save. If it doesn't work that's probably on Iron Gate to fix
TJ Wukitsch 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2021 When you do F5+help it does not list "save" as a server command. That probably only works in single player worlds.
Tim Brutton 5 Report post Posted February 17, 2021 As of today's patch, F5 - save on a hosted world now responds with feedback in the console, "Saving..". VikingsArise and Ryan Pennington

Tim Brutton 5 Report post Posted February 17, 2021 There were a couple of things relevant to this in today's patch notes: * Console "save" function can be used remotely if player is added to admin list * Autosave every 20min (instead of 30min) So - if you're an admin, you can use the F5 save on a hosted world now. And the auto-save timer is down to 20m! Ngbaka

kingbran 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2021 So... it displays "Saving.." when the command is used, but has anyone been able to confirm if it is actually saving the world?

aznshootest 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2021 (edited) Has anyone figured out the save function to work properly? I have my server up for 7 hours or so and I checked the FTP server with the world save, and it looks to have a timestamp that is no where near the current time and is hours behind (calculating based off of the hour time not changing for couple hours on the date modified column) Also, has anyone figured out what timezone the timestamps on the FTP is? The recommended post says it saves 30 mins, but doesn't look like it. I've tried using the "save" command via console since I set myself as admin, but I don't see it being reflected in the FTP. Does the server have to be empty for it to initiate a save or something? Edited February 20, 2021 by aznshootest clarification. Blisto 4 Report post Posted February 20, 2021 I have confirmed that it worked on my server. Me and my friends sailed a ship and had to restart before a boss fight. Everything was as we left it after the restart. The file world files shown in the FTP client are symbolic links to the real world files so they don't update in real time when you save in the game. I think they change time stamp whenever the server restarts With the most recent patch the autosave interval have been lowered to 20 min. If you connect to the server through a FTP client like WinSCP using the FTP details in your control panel then you can pull them out to your local machine. The files you are looking for are the two 0 byte 6 digit files ending in .db and .fwl. The digits are your server id, so mine for example are called 127870.db and 127870.fwl. Risky Raccoon 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2021 pretty sure that when you type "save" into the console, it is only saving your character data. Also, is it ok to backup the fwl & db files while the server is still running?
Ryan Pennington 359 Report post Posted February 23, 2021 You can type the save command from the F5 console while logged in as Admin to save on the fly.
