The friends list allows you to join servers that your friends are playing. Hytale utilizes UPnP (Universal Plug n Play) protocol to handle port forwarding w/ NAT passthrough as a fall back.

This guide explains how to connect to a Hytale server and play with friends.

Joining a Hytale Server

Method 1: Direct Connect (Most Common)

Direct connect lets you join any server if you have its IP address and port.

HytaleDirectConnectJoin.png
  1. Open the Hytale game
  2. From the main menu, select Multiplayer or Join Server
  3. Click Direct Connect or Add Server
  4. Enter the server address in the format: IP:Port
    • Example: 192.168.1.100:5520
    • Example: play.myserver.com:5520
  5. Click Connect or Join

Note: The default Hytale server port is 5520. If the server uses the default port, you may only need to enter the IP address.

Method 2: Server Browser (Coming Soon)

Hytale will feature a built-in server browser where you can discover and join public servers directly from the main menu. This feature will allow you to:

  • Browse servers by name, game mode, or region
  • See player counts and server descriptions
  • Filter servers by content rating
  • Join with one click

This feature will be available in a future update.

What You'll Need

To join a Hytale server, you need:

  • Hytale game installed on your computer
  • A Hytale account (logged in)
  • Server address - The IP address or hostname provided by the server owner
  • Server port - Usually 5520 (the default)

Finding Servers to Join

There are several ways to find Hytale servers:

  • Friends - Ask a friend who runs a server for their IP address
  • Server lists - Community websites that list public Hytale servers
  • Discord communities - Many servers advertise in Hytale Discord groups
  • Rent your own - Get a Hytale server from Survival Servers

Troubleshooting Connection Problems

"Connection Timed Out" or "Cannot Connect"

  • Check the server address - Make sure you typed the IP and port correctly
  • Server might be offline - Contact the server owner to confirm it's running
  • Firewall blocking connection - Temporarily disable your firewall to test
  • Wrong port - Confirm the correct port with the server owner (default is 5520)

"Version Mismatch" or "Incompatible Version"

Hytale requires the client (your game) and server to be on the exact same version. If you see this error:

  • Update your game - Open the Hytale Launcher and check for updates
  • Wait for server update - The server owner may need to update their server
  • Check announcements - Server owners often post when they're updating

"Connection Refused"

This usually means:

  • The server isn't running
  • The port isn't open on the server's firewall
  • You're trying to connect with TCP instead of UDP (Hytale uses UDP)

Lag or High Ping

  • Server location - Choose servers closer to your geographic location
  • Your internet connection - Test your connection speed and stability
  • Too many players - Some servers may be overloaded

Playing on a Local Network (LAN)

If you want to join a server running on another computer in your home:

  1. Find the server computer's local IP address
    • On Windows: Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig
    • Look for "IPv4 Address" (usually starts with 192.168)
  2. Use that local IP with the port: 192.168.1.X:5520

Note: LAN connections don't require port forwarding since you're on the same network.
