New save file created instead of existing file loaded

I built my server yesterday, set the serverconfig file to desired settings, had a great play session for several hours with friends.  I exited the game through the proper menu buttons (no crash or force quit).  Went to bed happy with visions of zombie smashing dancing in my head.  All was well until I logged into the server today and a new player save file was created instead of loading the existing file from the previous days session.  Panicked, I asked one of the friends playing yesterday to connected to the server.  They had no issues.  Their player save file loaded as expected (same inventory, correct logout location, base around them unchanged from how they left it at logout.)

I connected to my server FTP to have a look if my player file was still there.  It is where one expects it to be (Saves/Navezgane/[server name]/Player).  I see the time stamp of the .map, .ttp, and .ttp.bak files matching my log out time.  I also see the new character files from my login today (calling them the files-that-shall-not-be-named).

Why is the new character file being created?  Can I force a load of the previous character file save?  I double checked and PersistentPlayerProfiles is set to true.  I tried deleting the new save files, but can't due to permission access (even though I'm the admin).

How can I prevent this from happening again?  I don't want to play under the threat of random character resets at login.  Using console commands to restore lost levels and items is an option, but I don't want to do that if this is just going to happen again and again.  I just want to load my existing character save.

Any solutions, advice, guidance that can be provided will be much appreciated.  Thank you for your time.
