Best Way To Save World On The Fly?

Ok so say im running along and the world crashes (like others have said happened). We log back in, and a bunch of progress is gone. Is there a way to MANUALLY FORCE a GAME SAVE? If so, whats the easiest way. I Have FileZilla and have the FTP all logged in and what not, just need a little direction on how to save the game whenever i want. I wish i could just type /save or something like that and have the file backup. Or perhaps have an option on the control panel that you can click and it backups that file at that exact point in time? A little help from some mods here would be much appreciated. Thanks!

There's no way at this time. It's hard-coded to 30 min save intervals and with game server hosting there is no way to soft save (every provider will have the same issue until they add RCON)

UPDATE: This has been changed in subsequent Valheim updates. You can now type save in F5 menu as Admin to save on the fly.

  • Ryan Pennington changed the title to Best Way To Save World On The Fly?

How can we even check to see when it's saved if there are no save files kept on the server to begin with? Your FTP link to the server I run only has the original world files without any progress at all. I cant even get a copy of my world in it's current state.

30 minute save interval is hard-coded and happens every 30m of game uptime.

You can press F5 to open the console in-game and just type "save" to save the game manually at any time.

These are both functions built into the Valheim dedicated server, not Survival Servers hosting i.e. they will work the same regardless of if you host the game on your own PC, or host it here, or host it with any other provider.

I don't think there's any way to tell for sure without checking the timestamps of the world files before and after - I'm a new customer so I haven't got used to the interface enough to figure out whether we can do that here. But "F5 - save" is what's documented in the dedicated server readme and against the "F5 - info" command to initiate a manual save. If it doesn't work that's probably on Iron Gate to fix :)

As of today's patch, F5 - save on a hosted world now responds with feedback in the console, "Saving..".

Does anyone test it ? to check if it works ?

There were a couple of things relevant to this in today's patch notes:

* Console "save" function can be used remotely if player is added to admin list

* Autosave every 20min (instead of 30min)

So - if you're an admin, you can use the F5 save on a hosted world now. And the auto-save timer is down to 20m!

Has anyone figured out the save function to work properly? I have my server up for 7 hours or so and I checked the FTP server with the world save, and it looks to have a timestamp that is no where near the current time and is hours behind (calculating based off of the hour time not changing for couple hours on the date modified column)

Also, has anyone figured out what timezone the timestamps on the FTP is?

The recommended post says it saves 30 mins, but doesn't look like it. I've tried using the "save" command via console since I set myself as admin, but I don't see it being reflected in the FTP. Does the server have to be empty for it to initiate a save or something?

I have confirmed that it worked on my server. Me and my friends sailed a ship and had to restart before a boss fight. Everything was as we left it after the restart.

The file world files shown in the FTP client are symbolic links to the real world files so they don't update in real time when you save in the game.
I think they change time stamp whenever the server restarts
With the most recent patch the autosave interval have been lowered to 20 min.

How i can keep on my computer a backup of files of my word (.db, .fwl).

If you connect to the server through a FTP client like WinSCP using the FTP details in your control panel then you can pull them out to your local machine.
The files you are looking for are the two 0 byte 6 digit files ending in .db and .fwl. The digits are your server id, so mine for example are called 127870.db and 127870.fwl.
